Hong Kong’s 12-week fintech accelerator programme sponsored by Standard Chartered and Fidelity International «SuperCharger FinTech 2.0» has chosen its finalists.

For a second year running, SuperCharger, which aims to help the most promising start-ups and scale-ups grow in Asia, has surpassed other Hong Kong FinTech accelerators with almost 200 applicants from 33 countries from which 8 finalists were selected.

Agricultural Bank of China to pay US$215 million to New York state for money laundering violations

Agricultural Bank of China Ltd will pay a US$215 million penalty for violating New York’s anti-money laundering laws and ordered the Beijing-based lender to install an independent monitor, in a rare U.S. penalty against one of China’s largest state-run banks,the state’s financial regulator said on Friday.

Bank officials engaged in “intentional wrongdoing,” including masking suspicious transactions at the New York branch, the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) said. The bank also “silenced” the branch’s chief compliance officer, the regulator said.

Ex-UBS Executive Director Joins HSBC

A former Executive Director, Wealth Management at UBS, Singapore, has crossed the street to take up a senior role with rival HSBC Private Bank.

In a statement to finews.asia HSBC Private Bank said: “We can confirm the appointment of Shang-Wei Chow as a Market Head, Domestic (Singapore) team at HSBC Private Bank, effective 3 November 2016. His appointment underpins our continued efforts to enhance our client servicing capabilities and deepen our engagement with clients.”

Chow is a seasoned private banker with nearly 15 years of experience managing client relationships and wealth portfolios in Southeast Asia. As a Market Head of the Domestic team he will be responsible for new business development and deepening existing client relationships in line with HSBC’s strategy. Prior to joining the bank he was Executive Director, Wealth Management at UBS, Singapore.

A Year of Change

HSBC has seen numerous changes to its Singaporean private bank throughout 2016 including the departures of HSBC veterans Rob Ioannou to DBS and Michael Hua to LGT Private Bank.

HSBC Private Bank in the city-state has also appointed several new bankers including a Head of Investment Counselling together with a new Head of Ultra High Net Worth Investment Counselling.

Senjo Group Relocates to Fintech Hub Singapore

Privately held investment firm Senjo Group has relocated its corporate headquarters to Singapore in recognition of Singapore’s growing influence in the Fintech sector. Representatives said the business-friendly environment and focus on financial innovation was key in their decision to lease the entire 56th floor of One Raffles Place. Senjo was only recently set up in 2015. The company was launched to manage a portfolio of payments processing, cross-border remittance, foreign exchange, trade finance, e-commerce, mobile payments, commodity trading and factoring businesses. Senjō also has regional offices in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Luxembourg and the UK, and operations in most major markets.

Change At The Top Of BEA China

Bank of East Asia (China) has appointed Cartier Lam Chi-man as executive director and chief executive. The role was previously held by Kwan Tat-cheong, who will take up a new position as senior advisor to BEA China.

Lam has experience in the banking industry and of mainland China’s financial markets due to his 20 years of experience working at BEA.

Fidelity retail head Waterhouse to move to Asia role

Fidelity head of UK retail sales Ben Waterhouse is to move to South East Asia to lead the firm’s sales efforts in the region, with retail sales director Russell Lancaster and head of UK wholesale John Clougherty taking on his responsibilities.

Mr Waterhouse joined Fidelity in 2010 from Legal & General Investment Management and will now become head of wholesale business for South East Asia and the Middle East as well as country head for Singapore.

Bank of Singapore to boost AUM with DZ PRIVATBANK Singapore clients

Bank of Singapore has been selected by DZ PRIVATBANK Singapore to sign a referral agreement that gives the latter’s clients the option to move their assets to the Singapore-based private bank.

This comes due to the impending closure of DZ PRIVATBANK Singapore.

JP Morgan Asset Management – Kenneth Tsang has joined the global real assets arm as managing director and head of research and strategy for Asia Pacific. Tsang, who will be based in Hong Kong, was previously a managing director at RED Capital Asia. Earlier in his career, he was head of Asia-Pacific research and strategy at LaSalle Investment Management and has also worked for Sanford Bernstein, ING REIM (now CBRE Global Investors) and JLL.

DBS to Buy ANZ’s Wealth, Retail Units in Five Asian Nations

DBS Group Holdings Ltd. will buy retail and wealth-management businesses from Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. in five Asian countries, in a move that lodges the Singaporean lender firmly in the ranks of the region’s largest private banks.

DBS will pay S$110 million ($79 million) above the book value of the businesses, which operate in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Indonesia, the lender said in a stock-exchange statement. The deal will add S$23 billion of wealth assets to DBS’s books, taking its total assets under management to S$182 billion, it said.

Hong Kong regulator probes UBS’s role as sponsor of certain IPOs

Swiss bank UBS (UBSG.S) said Hong Kong’s securities regulator is investigating its role as sponsor of certain unnamed stock market listings in the city, with the intention to start unspecified action against the bank and some of its employees.

The disclosure by UBS, released with its third-quarter financial results, made it the first major bank to say it was being probed since Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) introduced tougher rules for listing sponsors. UBS said the watchdog had informed it of its actions this month.
