Fengate Capital Management Opens Office in Australia

Fengate Capital Management Ltd. (“Fengate Capital”), one of Canada’s leading alternative asset management firms, has opened an office in Australia as part of their international investment strategy. The office, located in Sydney , will be the headquarters for Fengate’s Asia-Pacific operations. Mr. Greg Osborne has been appointed Managing Director – Head of Asia-Pacific to lead these operations.

The board of Platinum Asset Management has appointed a non-executive independent director.

Stephen Menzies will be Platinum’s fourth non-executive independent directors and will join the other four executive directors at the company’s board.

Menzies is also a director of Century Australia Investments and chairman of the Centre for Quantum Computation & Communication Technology.

He retired as a partner at Ashurst law firm last year and until his retirement was consistently ranked as one of Australia’s leading corporate lawyers.

As head of China practice for Ashurst, he oversaw the Shanghai and Beijing offices of that firm and as a senior lawyer he managed legal work of significant projects in capital markets and mergers including some of the largest transactions in Australia.

“We welcome Stephen because his legal background will complement the skills of other directors,” Platinum chairman Michael Cole said.

The global head of insurance coverage at HSBC GAM in Hong Kong is moving to Tokyo next month to be CEO of the bank’s Japan asset management operation. The current CEO, Sean Matsuda is retiring.

Patrice Conxicoeur, global head of insurance coverage at HSBC Global Asset Management (HSBC GAM), is moving to Tokyo to take up the role of chief executive for HSBC GAM Japan.

High conviction Australian equities boutique manager Altair Asset Management has appointed Alvin Chan and Tim Riordan as co-heads of research for the investment firm.

The announcement follows the recent appointment of former Platinum Asset Management global equity analyst Dr. Sally Warneford, who joins Altair as senior analyst.

AMP Capital has hired Eastspring Investment’s Nicholas Koh as senior portfolio manager on its multi-strategy team.

Amit Popat, a London-based partner in Mercer’s investment consulting business, will move to Singapore in June to take on the role of business leader for fiduciary management, growth markets.

The position is new and oversees the development and implementation of strategies to expand Mercer’s investments business in Asia, Latin America, South Africa and the Middle East, said a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for the firm.

Former Invesco Great Wall Fund Management vice president, Liu Song, has reportedly filled the vacancy left by Tian Ren Can as general manager (GM) of HFT Investment Management (HFT), according to a report by China Business News.

The speculation after Mr. Tian stepped down from his position as HFT’s GM on February 6 for personal reasons. The firm had named its chairman, Zhang Wenwei, as Mr. Tian’s replacement in an interim capacity.
